1978 "Garfield University Illinois Illini" T shirt
What makes this vintage t shirt extra special, aside from the obvious; are the single stitch sleeves and double stitch bottom hem! This is a rare hybrid piece of garment manufacturing history! Around this time brands were starting to experiment with stronger methods of production; thus the double stitch was born. This was more costly though, so to provide stronger clothing while keeping costs reasonable brands started making their t shirts with durable double stitching on the bottom hem and affordable single stitching on the sleeves. This method didn't last long before we completely switched over to the double stitching we see in today's clothing, making it a unique piece of clothing history!
